Orchestra of Opera North credit: Richard Moran

The wait for Opera in the Park is almost over as the Orchestra of Opera North, Leeds Festival Chorus, Aled Jones and a host of renowned soloists prepare to take to the stage at Temple Newsam on Saturday 30 July.

Dougie Scarfe, Chorus, Orchestra and Concerts Director at Opera North tells us why Opera in the Park is so special.

“Opera in the Park is always one of the highlights of the cultural year in Leeds; a marvellous celebration of top quality music making with a fine array of internationally-acclaimed artists and the stunning Orchestra of Opera North alongside Leeds’ very own Festival Chorus.

“As ever, the programme is designed to delight and entertain and be completely accessible for the audience who come to this event. We are particularly pleased that Aled Jones will be joining Opera in the Park, both to present the evening and to sing some superb numbers.”

The evening of outdoor opera features TV and singing star Aled Jones together with renowned soloists Orla Boylan, Heather Shipp, Gwyn Hughes Jones & David Kempster with music provided by the Orchestra of Opera North, Leeds Festival Chorus and a firework finale! The evening will include pieces from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Verdi’s La Traviata along with music from Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Handel and Glinka. More modern pieces from musicals include Somewhere from Leonard Bernstein’s classic West Side Story, I could have danced all night from My Fair Lady by Lerner and Loewe and Losing my mind from Follies by Stephen Sondheim.
